Guest selector announced for AFV 2023
Film critic and curator Neil Young selects the international competition for Alternative Film Video
Following last year’s guest selector Katia Rossini of Cinema Nova in Brussels, the guest selector for Alternative Film Video 2023 is independent critic and curator Neil Young.
Neil Young (Easington, UK, 1971) is a film-critic/curator and occasional filmmaker from Sunderland, England, resident in Vienna. He regularly reviews films for Screen International and contributes to several international outlets including Sight & Sound magazine. A former director of the Bradford International Film Festival at the UK's National Media Museum, he now works for several film festivals around Europe including the Viennale, Vienna Shorts (Head of Selection, Austrian Competition) and Kortfilmfestivalen (Grimstad, Norway). His films as director include the feature-length Rihaction (2019), mid-length Point d'impact (2022) and several shorts, most recently ATM: You Have Thirty Seconds To Withdraw (2023.) He has served on many international film festival juries, and was president of the FIPRESCI juries at Berlin in 2015 and Venice in 2017.
Neil has been a longtime supporter of Alternative Film Video and has visited us in Belgrade on numerous occasions. He is well acquainted with the city, the audience and the artists. This will be our first collaboration with Neil and we are very excited to see the international competition through his discerning lens!
